When our father, Professor M.S.Rao opened his mail at 1300 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on 20th August, 2012 he found an e-mail from his friend, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith who is a Million-selling author of the New York Times bestsellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. He is an executive coach for top CEOs in the world and has been ranked as the World’s 7th Management Thinker according to Thinkers50. Marshall conveyed a personal message to my father as both are known each other since long as Marshall gave a number of endorsements for my father’s books and wrote foreword for his book as well as for one of our books. My father thanked Marshall for the mail as the mail came when the latter was in Dubai on August 19, 2012. My father received another e-mail immediately and realized from his e-mail signature that Marshall was in Hyderabad on August 20, 2012. My father was excited as he never met him personally except communicating through e-mails frequently. He enquired Marshall about the Hotel and other details. My father immediately informed us over phone about Marshall’s visit to Hyderabad as he was outside, and asked us to get ready to interview Marshall.
We along with our father Professor M.S.Rao went to Westin Mindspace and met Marshall at 1500 hours IST on August 20, 2012 in room number 1702. We received warm welcome from Marshall who appeared very simple. He introduced himself with his brief profile and asked all of us to introduce with our profiles. He had a great sense of humor and never felt like a great person although he is a renowned coach globally and the #1 ranked coaching guru in the world.
We interviewed Marshall Goldsmith from the perspective of youth, their aspirations and expectations and chatted for 45 minutes on various global issues and got photographed with him along with our father. Marshall gifted us a comic book titled, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ with his autograph. We were excited meeting such a great global management thinker who is very simple, humble and above all, a fine human being. We thanked him for the interview and left the hotel and reached home. The total interview lasted for 45 minutes and including chatting we spent 90 minutes with him approximately. It is a memorable day in our lives.
