Protect Environment – M.Ganesh Sai

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed” – Mahatma Gandhi

Environment is all about combination of air, water, soil and materials for the human beings and other living organisms. These days the food we eat is adulterated, the water we drink is contaminated and the air we breathe is polluted. This is the sorry state of earth today. These pollutions are created by human beings. God has gifted us with beautiful nature and we exploited it for our selfish ends recklessly thus paying heavy price currently. There are various types of pollutions created by human beings such as Air pollution, Water pollution, Soil pollution, Noise pollution etc., Apart from these pollutions ozone depletion is another cause for concern for all of us.  Let us look at various types of pollutions:

Air Pollution:

It is caused due to the gases like sulphur oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide. Those are due to smoke, dust and liquids. It has several adverse effects on mankind. Here are the few steps to control:

  • Reduce usage of automobiles that emit gases.
  • Plant trees near your home and industries.
  • Use low sulphur coal in industries.

Water Pollution:

Presently the water we drink is contaminated. Contamination is done when industries discharge toxic and radioactive material into water. It kills the aquatic animals and makes water unsuitable for drinking. Sometimes ships carrying oils travelling in oceans may sink due to the spread of oils in water.

Noise Pollution:

We hear various sounds everyday. The sound may be enjoyed by few and not by others. The unpleasant and unwanted sound causes noise pollution. The noise pollution is caused by vehicles. The rising decibel level in urban areas is a cause for concern for all of us. The other main cause of noise pollution is during various festivals such as  Diwali. Diwali is the festival of light. This festival is meant for the reunion of entire family. People celebrate this festival by bursting crackers. It causes noise as well as air pollution. Crackers are disturbance for old people and infants. It might even cause heart attacks, headache to old people. So we should limit the usage of crackers. Here are the steps to check noise pollution:

  • The noise making machines should be kept in containers with sound absorbing materials.
  • People should try to reduce the use of vehicles.

The combinations of different types of pollutions lead to ozone layer depletion.

Ozone Depletion:

Within the stratosphere around 15-35km above from earth ozone is located. The combination of triatomic form of oxygen is called ozone. Industries which were once considered a boon now became a bane because of releasing toxic gases in air which leads to formation of holes in the ozone layer causing ozone depletion.

Effects of Ozone Depletion:

  • Ozone depletion in the stratosphere results in Ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation falling on the earth. It causes skin cancer. The skin cancer doesn’t cause death but leads to many problems.
  • The absorption of UV rays will damage the eyes causing irritation.
  • The crops will be decreased.
  • The UV rays not only cause problems for the human beings but also to animals and plants also.

Tips to Tackle:

  • Protect your skin by using skin cream.
  • Use sun glasses and hats to protect your eyes and body.
  • Minimize Chloro Floro Carbons (CFC).

Greening earth should first start in the minds of the people from childhood itself so that they will follow rest of life.  Besides, protecting environment is possible with the cooperation of government and people. Only when government takes right legislative measures and people follow it strictly we can expect a clean environment ensuring ecological balance. Hence, it is time to shift our emphasis from economic efficiency to sustainable quality of life so that we can leave a legacy to next generation.  Arnold Schwarzenegger rightly remarked, “We have to show leadership in protecting our environment so that we have a future for our children and grandchildren.”
